Arsenal 3-0 Rennes PLAYER RATINGS: Maitland-Niles capped superb display

  /  autty

Arsenal made it six English clubs in the quarter-finals of European competition as they overturned a first-leg deficit to beat Rennes in their Europa League clash.

Having lost 3-1 in north-west France last week, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hit a brace and Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored just his second Arsenal goal to secure a 3-0 victory on Thursday.

Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester United progressed to the last eight of the Champions League and Chelsea cantered into the Europa League quarter-finals earlier in the day, before Unai Emery's side completed the set and ensured the Gunners too would be involved in Friday's draws in Nyon.

Petr Cech

Had nothing to do in the first half except stretch his legs and think of retirement but was left scrambling when Niang’s shot hit the post after the break. 6.5

Shkodran Mustafi

His proneness for errors must leave Emery with heartburn. His mistake allowed Rennes to hit the post but he recovered well to make some crucial blocks. 7

Laurent Koscielny

A real leader in the heart of Arsenal’s defence. Has the experience to control the back three, which also gives him extra cover when needed. 7

Nacho Monreal

Excellent on the left side of Arsenal’s back three, snuffing out any balls into the channel. This system really suits his game. 7

Ainsley Maitland-Niles

A superb performance in the wing-back role down Arsenal’s right. Won big tackles, charged forward to help create Aubameyang’s opener before arriving at the back post to nod in their second. What a talent. 8.5

Aaron Ramsey

An early assist for Aubameyang and crucial in the build-up for Arsenal’s second. Kept everything ticking. Is there any way Emery can shred that pre-contract agreement without Juventus noticing? 7.5

Granit Xhaka

Strong in the tackle, which sometimes verges on the clumsy. Got on the ball but did not always use it that well. 6.5

Sead Kolasinac

Marauded forward in the second half. Put in a huge tackle when Rennes looked to be on a late surge and crossed for Aubameyang’s second goal. 7.5

Mesut Ozil

Starting a third successive game for Arsenal after being trusted in the victory over United. Maybe he’s finally won Emery over, although not at his creative best here. 6.5

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Got Arsenal off to a flyer with an early goal, remained alert when everyone else had switched off to set up Maitland-Niles for the second and then grabbed Arsenal’s third. Should have had a hat-trick and a hat-ful. 8.5

Alexandre Lacazette

Had a point to prove after being left out of the France squad but took his frustrations out on the legs of Benjamin Andre more than the Rennes goal. Was lucky not to be sent off. 6

Manager: Unai Emery

What a turnaround. Only the second team to progress in the Europa League knock-out stages after losing the first leg 3-1. Decision to play a back three worked well. 7.5
