Ferdinand slams lacklustre PSG following Liverpool defeat

Rio Ferdinand laid in to Paris Saint-Germain following their 'testimonial' display against Liverpool in the Champions League.

The Ligue 1 giants fell to a 3-2 defeat as Roberto Firmino - who came off the bench following the eye injury he picked up against Tottenham - grabbed a brilliant injury-time winner at Anfield on Tuesday night.

However, PSG were fortunate to get back into the game from two goals behind and Liverpool should have in fact wrapped up the win earlier after being in such a commanding position.

And following the final whistle, Ferdinand slammed Thomas Tuchel's side by claiming he doesn't 'see them as a team' and that they played the game with 'zero intensity'.

Ferdinand told BT Sport: 'Liverpool were much what we expected. The energy, the intensity in which they played with, attacking at every moment but the Paris Saint-Germain team, I'll be honest with you, I was very very disappointed in them.

'As individuals, collectively, there was zero intensity. Complete opposite scale to the Liverpool team. For me at times, it looked like they were in a testimonial game the way they played. The forwards never wanted to defend, I don't know if they are not asked to or they just don't want to and they got punished.

'You come to Anfield, 11 players need to perform and today this Liverpool team outperformed and outworked this Paris Saint-Germain team. They have built a superstar team, they have got superstar players but I don't see them as a team.'

Ferdinand wasn't the only pundit to criticise PSG on Tuesday - with former Liverpool left back John Arne Riise describing them as 'lazy'.

Riise added: 'The PSG players, I would have been mad if I support them, seeing how lazy they were at the front and how they didn't run back.'

The Parisians have dominated in France for years now but there ultimate goal is to win the Champions League.

However, PSG in recent years have failed to make the step up in Europe and Michael Owen believes they can't cope with the change in intensity from Ligue 1 to the Champions League.

When asked by Gary Lineker whether Ligue 1 being too weak affects PSG in Europe, Owen replied:'I think that's got something to do with it yes. There are not too many good teams in the French league.

'Nearly on the 90 minutes and they were going to get a point out of the game, it would have been an absolute robbery. Liverpool were by far the best team, they should have won by multiple goals.'
