Godin ready for the responsibility of being Atletico Madrid captain

Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin said that he understands the responsibility of now being club captain ahead of the European Super Cup clash with city rivals Real Madrid.

Godin has long led by example and been a key man for coach Diego Simeone but now he will actually wear the armband following Gabi's departure.

"This is a moment of great responsibility especially as the captain, I hope that I can continue to help my team to achieve the goals set by the club," Godin told a press conference.

"I am in touch with Gabi all the time, and we would have loved to have him with us but he took another route. We are here properly prepared for the final, what is important is what happens on the pitch and we want to win the trophy."

Atletico have made a number of signings this summer and Godin claimed that all the club will ask for them is that they give their best.

"I don't think that we have to give them too much advice as all we ask from them is that they give their all and do their best for the team, that is enough," he explained.

"They have the individual skill and quality already and they are here because of that. We want to feel a sense of commitment and hard work from them."

Antoine Griezmann returned late to preseason training after the World Cup but Godin has no doubt about his fitness level.

"He is in the best form after winning the World Cup and I am sure he will be in top form," he added.
