Lineker: Only fans 'who really don't like Liverpool' want season to be cancelled

Gary Lineker has claimed that only supporters 'who really don't like Liverpool' want the Premier League season to be called off.

All elite football in England has been suspended until at least April 30 because of the coronavirus pandemic and there has been much debate over what should happen with the games that have yet to be played.

Liverpool are 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League and Lineker feels that only those who want the Reds to miss out on ending their 30 year wait for the title want the campaign to be scrapped.

Lineker told talkSPORT: 'I think ideally we'd like to finish the season, I think that would make sense.

'But this whole situation is so fluid and much more important than anything, it's difficult to know when it's going to go away.

'We could be able to play again by June, it might have calmed down enough, whether that will be behind doors, which is not really what football's about, but it would help to finish the leagues.

'That's the thing everybody would want to happen, except perhaps some supporters who really don't like Liverpool.

'I think that would be the fairest thing.'

Liverpool have nine league games remaining this season, while other teams, including Manchester City, have ten games left to play.

There have been suggestions that games could be played behind closed doors in close proximity this summer, although that could have a knock-on effect for when the next campaign will begin.

That would also raise issues regarding players whose contracts expire at the end of June.

Furthermore, there would be concerns about how fit players would be as they wouldn't have trained as a team for some time.
