Man United 'close in on £50m-plus move for Fiorentina star Federico Chiesa'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly closing in on a move for Fiorentina star Federico Chiesa - but the 22-year-old will need 'extra convincing' to leave Serie A.

Corriere Fiorentino, who cover Fiorentina extensively, report that a £50million-plus deal 'is close to being agreed' but there remains some doubts on Chiesa's side about a move to the Premier League.

Solskjaer is keen to strengthen at right-wing with Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho appearing to be the club's primary target.

But with Dortmund holding out for around £100m, that move may prove a stretch too far in the first transfer window since the coronavirus pandemic commenced back in March.

Sportsmail exclusively revealed back in February that Solskjaer sent one of his trusted aides to go and personally scout Chiesa in a 1-1 draw with AC Milan.

Since breaking into the first team in 2016, Chiesa has been a hit for La Viola but crucially for his suitors, is likely to cost in the £50-60m bracket.

Chiesa - the son of former Italy striker Enrico - is rated as one of Italy's best young prospects and will be an integral part of their squad for next summer's European Championship.

And yet should he be convinced to leave Serie A this summer, he could be available given Fiorentina owner Rocco Commisso has refused to shut the door on exit talk.

Speaking to reporters last month, Commisso said: 'If Chiesa wants, then he can leave, but only for the figure that we set.

'It's a different matter for Gaetano Castrovilli, as he told me that he wants to remain in Florence.

'If Chiesa does go, then Castrovilli can have the Number 10 jersey.'

Chiesa has delivered seven goals for Fiorentina this season and is typically deployed as a winger but can also be comfortable in a No 10 role or through the middle.

With Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial two of the three mainstay players in United's attack, competition for the emerging Mason Greenwood in the final spot is vital as Solskjaer continues to build a side to compete for major honours.
