Umtiti could return for Barcelona's difficult October run-in (Marca)

Didier Deschamps was unable to call on Samuel Umtiti for the current international break due to the defender's knee injury, however he could return for Barcelona's difficult October run-in.

Umtiti has been suffering with an issue in his knee since mid-September and the Blaugrana have been careful not to set a recovery date for the former Lyon star.

MARCA understands that the defender has a chondropathy in his left knee, which is essentially discomfort in the cartilage.

This injury is common in young adults and athletes who expose their knees to incredible physical stress and it has emerged that he has been struggling with this issue for a rather long time.

He's been essentially masking the injury with injections, which have allowed him to play on without the pain becoming debilitating.

The World Cup winner has already missed matches against Athletic Club, Tottenham and Valencia, but he hopes to take advantage of the international break in order to recover.

There remains an outside chance he will be ready to return to take on Sevilla, although Los Cules then face hugely important fixtures against Inter in the Champions League and Real Madrid in LaLiga Santander.

A conservative treatment option has been favoured by the centre-back, which is based on stimulating the cartilage via use of an ultrasound, with these measures putting off the need for surgery.

Should this treatment be unsuccessful then an arthroscopy would be inevitable, a procedure that would almost definitely see Umtiti sidelined until the new year.
