Sergi Roberto reportedly not planning on signing new contract with Barcelona

Sergi Roberto has become a somewhat divisive figure in Catalonia in recent months, with sub-par performances drawing the ire of Blaugrana fans already frustrated by the position of the once great club.

The Spaniard, now 29 years old, has made 5 starts for Ronald Koeman’s side this season, but has seen his place in the starting XI taken by Oscar Mingueza and Sergio Dest, while he cannot break into the side in central midfield.

The versatile operator is down to the last twelve months of his contract in Spain, and is yet to renew his deal.

Now, as per reports, Roberto will be looking to reject any new contract proposals from his current club, and has decided to leave the Catalan outfit.

Arsenal join Manchester City in chase for the Spaniard

Manchester City are thought to be keen on Roberto’s versatility, with Pep Guardiola looking for cover for Joao Cancelo as he seek to have 2 options in every position.

However, they are not alone, with Arsenal also having reportedly joined the race for the 29 year old. Arsenal fans will be wary of the sense in the link to a player that will be 30 in February, and which seemingly goes against the policy of regenerating the squad.

And yet, Roberto would fit the bill stylistically. with Mikel Arteta keen on an inverted right-back who can slot into the midfield during build-up. Currently, only Takehiro Tomiyasu and Callum Chambers really fit the bill, and it is unclear where Chambers’ future lies.

While it would not be a particularly glamourous signing, would it allow the Gunners to spend big in other, more needed areas?
