Former Osasuna director admits to the fixing of three La Liga matches

  /  autty

Angel Luis Vizcay, a former director at Osasuna, has spoken about three matches in which he claims there was match-fixing in the 2012/13 and 2013/14 seasons and also about other matches in which third parties were allegedly paid a bonus to win.

Speaking at the second day of the 'Osasuna Case' trial, the former director claimed that Osasuna paid 150,000 to Real Valladolid as a bonus to defeat the Navarre team's relegation rivals Deportivo La Coruna and 150,000 euros to Real Betis to defeat fellow relegation rivals Celta Vigo in the 35th round of the 2012/13 season.

In addition, he claimed that Getafe were offered 400,000 euros to lose their game against Osasuna, although it remains unclear if this money was paid and if it reached its intended destination.

Real Valladolid, Real Betis and Osasuna all won their matches that weekend, all by a 1-0 scoreline.

Osasuna stayed up that year, finishing 16th with 39 points, three points above the relegation zone.

The following season, in 2013/14, Osasuna were relegated, but Vizcay has claimed in court that there were once again attempts to corrupt matches towards the end of the season.

He said there was a payment to Real Betis of 400,000 euros to defeat Real Valladolid in the penultimate weekend and that Real Betis were paid another 250,000 euros to lose against Osasuna on the final day.

It was also said that Espanyol were paid 250,000 to draw with Osasuna in the penultimate weekend.

These results happened, as Real Betis defeated Real Valladolid 4-3, as Osasuna and Espanyol drew 1-1 and as Osasuna defeated Real Betis 2-1.

However, Osasuna were still relegated in any case along with Real Valladolid and also Real Betis, who finished rock bottom and who'd had their relegation confirmed weeks before.

Former president Miguel Archanco also spoke and denied that Osasuna fixed any matches, although he did admit that a bonus was paid to Real Betis to win their 2013/14 37th round match against Real Valladolid.

Archanco said that this was discussed by the board and that it was agreed they wouldn't pay teams to drop points on purpose, but that they might pay bonuses to incentivise third parties to win.

That goes against Vizcay's claims that Getafe, Real Betis and Espanyol were all paid for matches against Osasuna to ensure favourable results for the Navarre-based side - two defeats and a draw.

Both Vizcay and Archanco were declaring in court for about two hours, while the day's other testimony came from former vice-president Juan Pascual, who spoke more briefly.

It's important to note that Getafe, Real Betis and Espanyol  are not being investigated at this trial.
