This was the first ever Derby della Capitale to be played on a Friday, but was also behind closed doors due to the ongoing pandemic, leading to a very different atmosphere.

Thomas Strakosha and Mohamed Fares were injured, so Pepe Reina started in goal, with Joaquin Correa only fit for the bench. The Giallorossi missed Antonio Mirante, Davide Santon, Federico Fazio, Riccardo Calafiori and Nicolò Zaniolo, but this was Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s first derby, as he missed both 1-1 draws last season.

Lazio started more aggressively and took the lead when Roger Ibanez was caught napping by Manuel Lazzari on the edge of his own penalty area, setting up Ciro Immobile to fire into the far top corner.

Pepe Reina almost got into a tangle with Mkhitaryan and gifted a corner, but Ibanez had another disastrous error when pressed by Lazzari. When the winger realised there wouldn’t be a penalty for their collision, he got back on his feet and passed it back for Luis Alberto to score relatively undisturbed. Roma were furious both for Felipe Caicedo’s offside position in front of the goalkeeper and a potential Lazzari handball when he fell.

Mkhitaryan’s low volley went wide and Immobile’s first touch let him down when one-on-one with Chris Smalling.
