Isco didn't reject the armband: He had promised it to Carvajal

Beyond the scoreline, one of the most surprising things to come from Real Madrid's shock 3-0 defeat to CSKA Moscow was the apparent rejection of the captain's armband by Isco when Marcelo was withdrawn.

Speculation as to why the armband was given to Dani Carvajal has exploded, with Isco previously captaining Madrid against Melilla.

"I tried to give Isco the armband but he told me I had to give it to Carvajal," said Marcelo.

"I don't know why."

Isco was captain over Carvajal against Melilla, and the reason is simple: it's the line of succession at Madrid - Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Karim Benzema, Raphael Varane, Nacho, Gareth Bale, Luka Modric and then Isco.

With Isco signing for Madrid on July 3 and Carvajal arriving with the first team on July 5, the seniority held by the former over the defender is minuscule, if it exists at all and, as a result, the ex-Malaga player promised that Carvajal could take it.

And so, in the 74th minute, when Marcelo was taken off, Isco instructed the Brazilian to pass the armband on to Carvajal instead.
