Real Madrid beaten by Rangers on first pre-season trip

Real Madrid's trip to Glasgow was a wake-up call, as Los Blancos fell to a 2-1 loss to Scottish champions Rangers at Ibrox. Despite taking a very early lead through Rodrygo, Real Madrid were outplayed and second half goals from Fashion Sakala and Cedric Itten saw the home side take the victory.

While this was just Real Madrid's third match of the summer, after behind-closed-doors game against Fuenlabrada and Rayo Vallecano, it'll be a worry for the Italian that Rangers dominated his side from start to finish,

From the very off, Rangers applied pressure. Yet Real Madrid were able to take an eighth minute lead when a Martin Odegaard-led counter attack concluded with Rodrygo dinking his way through the Rangers defence and finishing into the bottom corner.

Despite taking the lead, Los Blancos couldn't take control. Steven Gerrard's energetic charges launched wave after wave of attack and Ryan Kent was particularly excellent throughout, although he struck the crossbar from just a couple of yards out to let Real Madrid off the hook, while a couple of dangerous Scottish freekicks ultimately came to nothing.

Rodrygo had another nice dribble and a shot that flew over at the beginning of the second half, before substitute Sergio Arribas - who was on for an ineffective Luka Jovic - headed over from a Marcelo cross early into the second 45 minutes too.

Rangers, though, netted an equaliser at the 55th tick of the clock as Sakala finished powerfully past Lunin, who was helpless this time as his defence was breached once again.

The Scottish side deserved that lead as they'd been on top for most of the game and, even though Miguel Gutierrez struck the post for the visitors after a nice Marcelo pass, things went from bad to worse for Ancelotti's side as Nacho was sent off for a second yellow in the 75th minute and as Itten then superbly directed a half-volley into the bottom corner for a home lead.

For Rangers, this was the perfect way to prepare for the start of their competitive season next week. For Real Madrid and Ancelotti, they'll be glad they have three weeks before competitive action resumes. There's a lot to work on.
