Real Madrid's Champions League woes: From three in a row to a nightmare

  /  autty

Real Madrid's form in Europe has gone from glory to ghastly in just over two years. Los Blancos' last Champions League title triumph in 2017/18 meant they had conquered Europe three times in a row, but since then they have suffered seven defeats, two draws and just eight wins in 17 games.

With the embarrassing group stage defeat on Wednesday night to a depleted Shakhtar Donetsk side, it's a nightmare that shows no sign of passing.

It's a new reality for Zinedine Zidane and his squad, whose era of dominance has come to an end, with teams no longer intimidated by playing them.

They haven't got off to a good start this year, but the signs were there even from their 2018/19 campaign, which included heavy defeats to CSKA Moscow and Ajax.

Real Madrid suffered last term too, beginning their group with a dreadful 3-0 reverse away at eventual finalists Paris Saint-Germain. They also drew with Club Bruges at home in a result that put paid to any ambitions they had of topping the group.

They did, however, progress to the knockout stages. But, having drawn Pep Guardiola's Manchester City in the last 16, Zidane's charges lost both matches and exited the competition.

Much has been made of the reasons behind Real Madrid's dropoff in form, with the club's relocation for competitive matches to the Estadio Alfredo Di Stefano at their training ground cited as one reason.

The other has been the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo's goals and presence, as well as Sergio Ramos' absences keeping him out of the side. Seven of the past eight Champions League matches he has missed have ended in a Real Madrid defeat.

Whatever it is, Zidane needs to find the answers fast.
