The coaches whose jobs may depend success in Europe

  /  autty

The Champions League and Europa League final stages will draw the curtain on the 2019/20 season and there are a few coaches whose future depends on the outcome of those tournaments.

Although the coronavirus outbreak has affected clubs both financially and from a sporting perspective, some of them could punish their coaches if they fail to deliver in Europe.

Let's take a look at those whose future may depend on their team's performances in Europe.

Quique Setien

Quique Setien replaced Ernesto Valverde in January and promised to help Barcelona improve their performances.

However, after seven months as the Blaugrana boss, he has failed to deliver as Barcelona finished second in LaLiga Santander, five points adrift of champions Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Barcelona were eliminated at the hands of Athletic Club in the Copa del Rey leaving the Champions League as Setien's only chance to continue coaching the Catalans next season.

If he succeeds, his position at the club should be taken for granted, but if he fails it would be practically a miracle to see him stay.

Maurizio Sarri

The Italian coach left Chelsea after winning the Europa League and joined Juventus to lead them to European glory.

Despite having won nine straight Serie A titles, the Old Lady are obsessed with clinching the Champions League, which they have failed to win in 24 years.

Meanwhile, Juventus struggled to win Serie A and Sarri has been criticised for the team's performances, while his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo has gone through many phases.

An elimination at the hands of Lyon, who won the first leg 1-0, or even a failure in the quarter-final may be cost Sarri his job.

Thomas Tuchel

Paris Saint-Germain have never made it past the Champions League quarter-finals despite the fact that in the last few seasons their main objective has been to win the trophy.

After having won all domestic competitions, missing out on the European title may cost Tuchel his job.

In principle, his position is not in danger, but everything depends on how the team will perform against Atalanta.

Even if his side get knocked out, he may still remain for next season but everything depends on what they show on the pitch.

Antonio Conte

Inter had a decent season and were in pursuit of Juventus until the very end of Serie A.

However, after Conte hit out on the club's board, accusing them of not protecting his players, his future remains unclear.

According to rumours, Inter are in talks with Massimiliano Allegri to replace Conte, but the logical thing would be for the former Chelsea coach to continue at the club next season.

The Nerazzurri haven't won a single title since 2011 and the Europa League will be their opportunity to bounce back and build bridges between coach and board.

Rudi Garcia

Lyon's season has been disastrous and sporting director Juninho Pernambucano decided to dismiss Silvinho and replace him with Rudi Garcia.

The Frenchman improved the team before the coronavirus outbreak led to Ligue 1's suspension.

Fans are uneasy with Garcia's appointment due to his Marseille past and although an elimination at the hands of Juventus shouldn't cost him his job, his future remains uncertain.
