Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri and sporting director Federico Cherubini had to be convinced to stay at the club after initially intending to resign following the entire board of directors stepping down from their positions on Monday night.
The dramatic departure of president Andrea Agnelli and co has left a tense environment in Turin, with players nervous about what will happen next.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Allegri and Cherubini were both prepared to walk away due to their loyalty to Agnelli, who won nine consecutive league titles between 2011-12 and 2019-20 during his reign, but they were talked around by the club's holding company Oxor's CEO John Elkann, and will stay put for now.
With the club in turmoil, Allegri and Cherubini's exits would have been another hammer blow which could have risked the sporting future of Juventus.
But they have now opted to remain in their roles, and Allegri has already taken steps to try to reassure his players.
The 55-year-old has made personal phone calls to his squad after first reaching out to new general manager Maurizio Scanavino.
Allegri is keen to avoid any panic spreading through the dressing room, with the team returning to training in the coming weeks before they restart their Serie A season in January.
La Gazzetta dello Sport have reported that Allegri will receive plenty of support from Cherubini moving forward, with Juventus aiming to secure a European finish this season while keeping the players all on the same page.
Allegri's long-term future remains in doubt, though. He has a two-year contract with an option to extend, but his love affair with the club may have been broken.
Rumours linking Antonio Conte with a return to Juventus have failed to go away, and Agnelli's resignation could now have pushed Allegri closer to the exit door.
The feeling is that there is only a temporary truce with Allegri until June. Elkann has a preference for Conte and the club will most likely try to bring him back to make it clear that they remain an ambitious force.
Elkann does not want to repeat the technical errors that have got the club into their current position, and is intent on taking Juventus back to the top of Italian football.
