Cagliari survived a late piece of Federico Chiesa brilliance to beat Fiorentina 2-1 on Friday and pile the pressure on Stefano Pioli.
Chances were few and far between until the second half, which began with Luca Cigarini lobbing Fiorentina goalkeeper Pietro Terraccino from his own half.
However, the goal was disallowed as it emerged Cigarini had taken an indirect free kick, which needed a touch from someone else to count.
Nonetheless, Fabrizio Cacciatore’s delightful cross from the right was slid home by Joao Pedro, who then hit the bar after Nicolo Barella had a shot saved from close range.
Fifteen minutes later, Luca Ceppitelli rose highest to head in another Sardinian delivery from the right and secure his side the win.
Fiorentina did pull a goal back late on, when Chiesea broke down the left and knocked a finish in off the post, but Cagliari held on for their third victory in five games.
The Viola, on the other hand, cling on to 10th place but could fall 10 points behind the Europa League spots if Torino or Atalanta win this weekend.
