Nicola: 'Genoa have come so far'

Davide Nicola feels the fact Genoa are disappointed with a 3-2 defeat to Lazio shows “how far we’ve come” in recent weeks.

The Grifone twice got back into the game with Francesco Cassata and a late Domenico Criscito penalty, but were unable to overturn Adam Marusic, Ciro Immobile and Danilo Cataldi goals.

“We recognise the quality of our opponents today, but there is also disappointment at the final whistle,” the coach told DAZN.

“That has to be a sign of how far we’ve come, as five or six games ago, losing to Lazio would’ve been considered perfectly normal, but we don’t feel like that now.

“We must be proud and also angry, because despite being against the team that is second in the Serie A table, we still could’ve taken a point today.

“We tried to take the initiative, but Lazio taking the lead so quickly allowed them to focus on the counter-attack. We work to learn from our errors and try not to repeat them.”

Genoa remain in the relegation zone, as this defeat ends a run of eight points from four rounds, but the performances have significantly improved since Nicola took over.

“We are looking to create a sense of consistency in our performances as well as our results. Who we are up against is almost irrelevant, we need to work on our own identity and approach.

“We’ve been working on a system with more forwards, so it’s a matter of getting the best out of our strengths.”
