Real Madrid can celebrate thanks to Kroos

If ever the importance of Toni Kroos to Real Madrid went under the radar, the Champions League quarter-final first leg win over Liverpool brought his talent back into focus.

The German might not win games with goals but, with 10 assists already this season, he is crucial to making Real Madrid tick.

His passing in Tuesday night's encounter at the Estadio Di Stefano resulted in his side's first two goals.

First was his delightful 40-yard ball over the top for Vinicius to slam home and then another attempted pass to Vinicius led to Marco Asensio slotting into an empty net.

Kroos was part of the all-conquering Real Madrid side that won three consecutive European Cups between 2014 and 2016.

Cristiano Ronaldo was the totem of that team, but Kroos - then and now - is the master craftsman who brushes the Real Madrid canvas.

When Kroos plays then Zinedine Zidane's team find their rhythm. Though he is now 31, if he continues to perform like this then he should still have many glorious European nights ahead of him.

Kroos' form is all the more impressive given how he has only just returned from injury.

One substitute LaLiga Santander appearance against Eibar was the only preparation he had for the Champions League tie, but it was enough to put on a masterclass and, as we've seen before, Europe's premier competition tells the good from the very good.
