Granit Xhaka's move to Roma could be off as the Italian club and Arsenal struggle to agree on a fee for the player.

A move to the Stadio Olympico has been rumoured for several weeks as the Swiss midfielder seeks a new challenge.

Arsenal want €20m for Xhaka, but Roma have so far failed to match that fee.

Xhaka is desperate to join the Serie A outfit, but the Gunners are standing firm on their transfer stance.

La Stampa, via TMW, claim that ‘everything has stopped’ because Roma haven’t matched Arsenal's valuation.

Personal terms between Xhaka and Jose Mourinho's side have reportedly been agreed, but the fee is now holding up the deal.

The Special One has already hailed the 28-year-old, insisting he is a crucial cog at the Emirates.

He said: “Granit Xhaka is the main man in the entire Arsenal midfield, you can’t see it unless I lend you one of my eyes. Without him, Arsenal is lost.

"He is a leader. Remember, mistakes are made by humans."

Mourinho has made it clear to the Roma hierarchy that the Swiss star is among his top targets.

Xhaka offered a cryptic response when questioned on his Gunners future.

He told Look: "Arsenal know what I want to do… it is very beautiful here (in Rome)."

Xhaka is so desperate to secure a move to Roma that he is prepared to give up his Arsenal bonuses if it means securing a move to Roma.

Mikel Arteta has already convinced the midfielder to stay put once, but now faces a tough task in doing so again.

After clashing with fans in 2019 Xhaka looked set for the exit door, but the Arsenal boss made it known how much he valued him.

The Swiss star remained in north London but could now be part of a reshuffle at the Emirates.

A deal for Ben White is edging closer after the Gunners agreed a £50m fee with Brighton for the centre-half.

Tammy Abraham is also on the Gunners wishlist with a loan move touted ahead of an obligation to buy in 12 months time.

Chelsea are seeking £40m for the striker.

Arsenal have so far added Nuno Tavares and Albert Sambi Lokonga for a combined £23m.

The Gunners though have sanctioned the departures of William Saliba and Matteo Guendouzi whilst David Luiz' contract was not renewed.

Emile Smith Rowe has handed Arsenal a recent boost by signing a new deal.
