Spurs ‘agree’ deal to sell Alderweireld

Tottenham will be getting a significant boost to their transfer funds this summer with the sale of one of their defensive stalwarts.

Belgian international Toby Alderweireld is subject to a move to Qatar by this summer after a near 13 million-pound bid was accepted by the North London club.

The Belgium international’s move is subject to agreeing personal terms and flying to the Middle East to complete a medical, which would bring an end to six seasons at Spurs following his arrival from Atletico Madrid in 2015.

Alderweireld has made over 170 league appearances for Spurs since arriving from Atletico Madrid after an impressive loan spell with Southampton.

He formed a formidable partnership alongside Jan Vertonghen. The fellow Belgian also left the side for Benfica.

Who will replace him?

Spurs have been linked with a number of centre-back replacements including Atalanta’s Cristian Romero and Bolonga’s Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Tomiyasu can also play as a right-back which appeals to Nuno Espirito Santo with a departure of Serge Aurier another possibility this summer.

The Ivory Coast international has just one year on his deal and with Matt Doherty well-known by Nuno, the former PSG man looks to be the one surplus to requirements.
