Duncan Ferguson described Everton's victory against Chelsea as 'incredible' after the strugglers delivered a vastly improved showing in the Scot's first game as caretaker manager.

The Toffees, who axed former boss Marco Silva after the defeat to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby, had stunned Frank Lampard's men at Goodison Park.

And the emotional 47-year-old former striker hailed his side's timely resurgence - but refused to be drawn into speculation surrounding the permanent role.

Speaking to BT Sport, Ferguson said: 'It was incredible, I’ve never felt anything like it in my life. It was unbelievable. What an atmosphere.'

And when quizzed whether the ex-professional had imagined his managerial bow culminating in a similar result, Ferguson admitted he had.

He added: 'I did to be honest with you. I know we had to defend a lot, and had to sit back and keep in a good shape and actually pick our time to break. I think we did well. I thought all the players were absolutely fantastic.'

The caretaker boss also reserved special praise for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who had struck twice to propel Everton back out of the relegation zone.

'We really like him here,' Ferguson said. 'The goals are coming, he scored two today, and he’s always that threat in behind. We had help up there as well with Richarlison, and I thought it worked really well. What an incredible shift everyone put in.'

And after leaving the pitch to a rapturous response from the home crowd, the club legend admitted he was relishing the chance to recover from the experience back at home.

He added: 'I’m just looking to get home and lie down! I was just looking at this game and we're savouring the moment. It's three fantastic points for us, that's the main thing. It’s an unbelievable experience, one I'll never forget.'

But Ferguson also waved away questions surrounding his interest in permanently taking over from the outgoing Silva, and stressed the importance of focusing on one result at a time.

'I’m here for Everton, I'm here for as long as they want me here,' the interim boss revealed. 'I'm sure they're out there looking for candidates, and rightly so. We want the best guys in the world managing this football club. This was just an incredible experience for me.

'I think they saw on the touchline how enthusiastic I was, but it’s one game, it's one result. Honestly, one game, it was a fantastic feeling for me. Incredible effort the players put in. It's unbelievable.'
