Foden's dad is a Man United fan as Man City midfielder is trying to change him

Phil Foden says his dad will be backing Manchester City to beat Manchester United on Saturday, despite him being a lifelong Red.

Foden, himself a City fan, will be looking to get some game time when United visit the Etihad in a game Pep Guardiola's side cannot afford to lose in the Premier League.

Going into Saturday's fixtures, City were 11 points behind leaders Liverpool, who travelled to Bournemouth in the 3pm kick-offs. Standing in their way is a confident United side, fresh from beating Tottenham in midweek.

That is where Foden's father will have his allegiances tested, as the teenager revealed his family are split between supporting City and United - Foden and his mother are Blues, while his father and brother are Reds.

“Derbies used to be crazy because our family is split between City and United,” Foden told ManCity.com.

“It used to be crazy watching it. There were a lot of scenes. My brother's a United fan, so he'd wear his United top and I'd wear a City one and when someone scored we'd give each other banter.

“I don't really get that as much now, because I'm always going to be at the game. Even if I'm not playing I'll be there watching, so I won't see them."

On Saturday, Foden revealed he has persuaded his dad to back City rather than United

“My dad's a United fan and he comes and watches, and I ask him who he'll support and he says City, just for that day. I'm changing him slowly!”
