Joe Cole lauds Everton in Duncan Ferguson's first game as caretaker boss

Joe Cole has hailed Everton's performance in their victory against Chelsea - with the former Chelsea star believing that the players delivered because of caretaker boss Duncan Ferguson's impact.

The Toffees downed Frank Lampard's men at Goodison Park after Richarlison's opener and a brace from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with club legend Ferguson seen celebrating each goal wildly along the touchline.

BT Sport pundit Cole then attributed Everton's stellar showing to the influence of the man at the helm.

But Cole also opined that Ferguson had been unable to fully stamp his mark on the team because of the short amount of time before the lunchtime clash and Marco Silva's sacking on Thursday.

Instead, the ex-winger believes that Ferguson simply restored fighting spirit back into the club's struggling ranks.

He said: 'The first tackle that went in, the place erupted and it just galvanised the whole place. Everybody seemed like they had 20/30 percent more.

'You can talk about Duncan and what he can do... that was it - an emotional message, get them together. There wasn't anything tactical today that was special, it was 11 players just together and fighting for the badge. And that was enough for them to get the win today.'

Long-standing Everton servant Leon Osman admitted that Calvert-Lewin's heroics may have been a result of his desire to impress Ferguson.

'He looked a 20/30 percent better player than he has done this season,' he said. 'He went out there today and fought for his manager. There are some managers that you can just play for and you're able to give that bit extra for them.'

But despite hauling Everton out of the drop zone, Ferguson refused to place his name in the running for Silva's permanent successor - although Cole views the Scot as a potential shrewd appointment.

He added: 'We see (Farhad) Moshiri with a smile on his face. We’ve not seen that for a long time. He would have seen Goodison Park light up. That would have put something in his mind. He’s been a coach for many years, he knows every inch of the place. Why not?'
