Manchester United supporters have torn into Casemiro after the midfielder appeared to smile as he left the pitch after their dismal defeat to Sevilla.

Erik ten Hag's side headed to Spain with the Europa League quarter-final level at 2-2 on aggregate following the first leg at Old Trafford last week.

United were strong favourites to progress to the semi-finals but they put in a dreadful performance and were totally outclassed by the LaLiga outfit, who ended up 3-0 winners thanks to two goals from Youssef En-Nesyri and one from Loic Bade.

And following the final whistle - with Sevilla reaching the final four of the competition by virtue of a 5-2 aggregate win - Casemiro was seen laughing with the referee despite putting in one of his worst performances since arriving at Old Trafford from Real Madrid for £70m fee last summer.

United fans noticed this and fumed as one angry fan said: 'Why the f*** is Casemiro smiling I don’t know what there is to smile about.'

Another added: 'Casemiro is going to get pelters ( rightly so ) for laughing and smiling after that woeful and abject @ManUtd performance.'

A further supporter said: 'Casemiro laughing with the ref right after that dreadful performance?! Clearly not as gutted as the fans standing in the terrace who've paid a fortune to watch that shambles!'

Meanwhile, other supporters questioned the team's mentality, while one even suggested the Brazilian should be dropped next season.

One said: 'Casemiro laughing with the Ref seconds after the final whistle says everything about the attitude of this group of mainly average players.'

A further angry supporter quipped: 'Casemiro should be a bench player next season. If you have eyes you will know.'

Ten Hag was fuming at his side's performance when speaking to the media after the final whistle as he said: 'We have to face that we let ourselves down and we let the fans down.

‘If you want to win trophies, if you want to be successful, you need character. We have to be better.

'It's not about playing skills. It’s about character, to be composed, to have desire and passion. Sevilla had more willingness to win, and that can't be. I think it's unacceptable.

'We lost the battles. Sevilla had more passion, more desire, more willingness, and that's difficult to win games.'

He continued: ‘The players have to perform. I believe in them and trust them, but they have to show it and they were not good enough.

‘We have shown on so many occasions good things but tonight we weren't ready for the game. At this level, playing for Manchester United, you have to be ready for every game.

‘This was a great opportunity, a great occasion, to win something and we gave it away. We have to blame ourselves. It's gone, we can't change it.’

United return to action on Sunday when they face Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final, while the Red Devils lie in third in the Premier League and are in a strong position to return to the Champions League next season.
