Alan Shearer has mocked Sunderland after they lost a penalty shootout to Portsmouth in the final of the Checkatrade Trophy on Sunday.
Lee Cattermole saw his spot-kick saved by Portsmouth's Craig MacGillivray as Pompey put away five flawless strikes to secure the trophy in front of a record-breaking crowd of 85,021 fans at Wembley.
And Newcastle United legend Shearer was not one to miss an opportunity to mock the supporters of the Toon's fierce rivals, branding them 's***', which he claimed he discovered by watching them on Netflix.
Shearer tweeted: 'A @SunderlandAFC fan next to me on the plane back to Newcastle and says as if my day couldn’t get any worse!!! I said what was the score?
'He said we got beaten. Ah well I said, I saw it on Netflix I knew you were s***!!!'
Shearer was referring to the Sunderland 'Til I Die documentary, an eight-part series which followed the club's miserable season in the Championship last year.
The Black Cats have enjoyed a much better campaign in the third tier under manager Jack Ross, and they had the chance to crown off a return to positivity by lifting the Checkatrade Trophy.
But they fell short in heartbreaking fashion, leading to little sympathy from the supporters of their Premier League nemesis, with fans praising Shearer for his dig on Twitter.
Sunderland took the lead through an Aiden McGeady free-kick but they were pegged back by a resilient Pompey side in the second half.
Nathan Thompson levelled with his first ever goal for the south-coast club, a moment which forced extra time.
Portsmouth then took the lead with less than 10 minutes to go through a superb chip by Jamal Lowe, only to see victory denied by a McGeady equaliser with seconds remaining.
Lee Cattermole was the only player to miss his spot-kick, allowing Oliver Hawkins to net the winner after four other excellent strikes from Portsmouth.

Well Sunderland scored in 39 minutes at the new Wembley and that’s more than Newcastle have in their history

They both are c r a p. At least Sunderland last won a trophy in 1973 though. It is even longer than that Newcastle did!

Most of fans only get to cheer for other teams failures. Sad fans.

Just a casual, throwaway comment by "big head" but nevertheless it sums up his utter lack of intellect and tv presenter ignorance. And that is what Shearer is - IGNORANT.

Some boy Shearer, wasn¿t he part of the team that got Booby Robson sacked. Shame he wasn¿t so vocal in defending Sir Bobby.

As an MUFC, I would like to remind Mr Shearer that a certain Mr Solskjaer cost 1/10th of what he did, and is a better manager than he is.

Funny, he knows its crossed his mind many times, he should of signed for Man Utd in the mid 90's. And won everything. But he signed for Newcastle and won NOTHING for over 10 years. The mags haven't won a major trophy since 1955. Enjoy x

Come on Shearer, that was uncalled for. I thought you were better than that. As a result of your unintelligence, I hope Arsenal do Sunderland a big favour tonight. Southampton supporter.

Hahahah great banter, nice to see a player having a joke with a fan instead of these ones that wear shades and act like they're above everyone.
