Karim Benzema sent Twitter into meltdown after producing a stunning back-heel nutmeg assist for Casemiro as Real Madrid beat Espanyol 1-0 on Sunday night.

In first half injury-time, Benzema ran onto Sergio Ramos' flick-on and then back-heeled the ball straight into the path of Casemiro who fired home.

The goal leaves Madrid two points clear of Barcelona at the top of La Liga and continues Benzema's stunning run of form after his wonder goal against Valencia.

The Frenchman's assist sparked thousands of tweets from fans, many of whom compared the 32-year-old's cheeky assist to Guti's famous back-heel 10 years ago.

On that occasion, Benzema was the recipient of Guti's genius and slotted home from close range, with supporters quick to compare the two on Sunday night.

Supporter @SamiiZaiin2 tweeted: "Guti did it first, Benzema perfected it."

Another fan, @PrinceBugatti, suggested Benzema had taken inspiration from his former team-mate: "So, Benzema learnt from the best. Guti!"

The Twitter account @TheExpertChels simply simply wrote: "Sorry for posting filth on the timeline."

As for the man of the moment himself, Benzema played down his heroics after the game: "The backheel? For me it’s football... I see football like that, I knew Casemiro was coming," he said. "It was a good assist but the important thing is Casemiro’s goal."

Casemiro played down his role in Benzema's brilliance and hailed the Frenchman for his enduring quality: "We won another final. Knowing Karim, what he has done is normal. We know that his quality is not a nine, he is a 10. The goal is Karim's.

"It’s unfair to talk about my goal. Benzema’s backheel is luxurious, he left me without a goalkeeper.”
