On this day in 1947, Santiago Bernabeu hosted its first match

Real Madrid played Os Belenenses from Portugal in the opening game and the legend of one of the great stadiums in the history of sports began. That friendly ended in a 3-1 win for the Whites, with goals being scored by Barinaga and Chus Alonso.

Seven decades later, Real Madrid have won a multitude of trophies at home and seen the best players in the world grace it’s turf. Di Stéfano, Gento, Amancio, Butragueño, Raúl and Cristiano Ronaldo are some examples of footballers who will always be linked to the history of the Whites’ stadium.

On this day in 1979, Liverpool, Man Utd & Madrid star and Ballon d'Or winner Michael Owen born

Owen jumped to the first team in 1996. A prolific striker, he netted 18 league goals in his first full season. After winning additional golden boots in 1998 and 1999, he was instrumental in Liverpool's successful League Cup, FA Cup, and UEFA Cup runs in 2000-01, leading to him being named the 2001 European Footballer of the Year.

The success drew the attention of Real Madrid, who signed him in August 2004 for a transfer fee of £8 million. But despite an impressive scoring record, he never settled in Spain and moved to Newcastle in August 2005 for a fee of £16 million. Owen then spent time with Manchester United and Stoke City before retiring in 2013.

On this day in 1986, Bergkamp made his professional debut

Born in Amsterdam in 1969, Bergkamp joined the club's youth academy in 1981. He was 17 when he made that first professional appearance at home against Roda, as manager Johan Cruff subbed him in for Rob Witschge in the 66th minute. Ajax were already up 2-0 at the time and that turned out to be the final score.

On this day in 2017, Pulisic won US Soccer player of the year

Receiving a comprehensive 94 percent of the tabulated votes, Pulisic turned in a remarkable performance for the MNT in 2017. The MNT’s biggest offensive contributor during the year, the 19-year-old recorded six goals and four assists in nine matches.
