On this day in 1986, Man City star David Silva born
Silva spent six years of his career with Valencia, appearing in more than 150 games and winning one Copa del Rey in 2008, before moving in the summer of 2010 to Manchester City. Since joining City, Silva has appeared in over 300 matches and is in his eighth season at the club. He has won the FA Cup, three League Cups and three Premier League titles. He is often regarded as one of, if not the, greatest ever Manchester City player.
Silva is known for having an excellent first touch, good dribbling skills, and outstanding technical ability, which, along with his intelligent attacking movements, allow him to retain possession in tight spaces, and to create space for himself and teammates to open up a defence.
On this day in 1997, Carragher made the first of his 737 Liverpool appearances
It seems that Liverpool blooding teenagers in January cup ties is not a recent phenomenon.
Some 22 years ago today, a certain Jamie Carragher made the first of his 737 Reds appearances, coming on as a substitute for Rob Jones in a 2-1 League Cup quarter-final defeat at Middlesbrough.
He didn’t turn out too bad did he?
On this day in 2011, Dalglish took charge of Liverpool for the second time
On 8 January 2011, Kenny Dalglish took charge of Liverpool for the second time, replacing sacked manager Roy Hodgson.
A star striker for the club from 1977 to 1990, with 169 goals in 355 appearances, six league titles, and three European Cups, Dalglish, nicknamed "King Kenny," served as player-manager there from 1985 to 1990.
Although he enjoyed some success, including winning the League Cup in 2012, poor form in the league led to his sacking in May 2012. He remains involved with the club, however, and currently serves as a director.
On this day in 2004, Mexico legend Campos announced retirement
Campos started his professional career in 1988 with Club Universidad Nacional, better known as Pumas. In order to get time on the pitch, he played as a striker until he won the job as first-team keeper. In 1991, he got his first cap for Mexico and would go on to make 130 appearances for El Tri.
Although well-known for his bright and unique kits, which he designed himself, Campos was an accomplished keeper. During the 1996 CONCACAF Gold Cup, for example, he did not concede a single goal as Mexico claimed the title with a 2-0 win over invitee Brazil in the final.
On this day in 1992, Atletico midfielder Koke born
He spent the entirety of his career with Atlético Madrid since making his debut with the first team in 2009, playing over 300 official games and winning six honours, including the 2014 national championship and the 2012 and 2018 Europa League tournaments.
Koke is right-footed, but his versatility allows him to play as right, left or central midfielder. He is also known for his passing, and ability to create attacking opportunities.
On this day in 1991, Atletico defender Savic born
Savić started his career at the local club Brskovo, before moving to BSK Borča, and then to Partizan. He won the double with Partizan, and then joined Manchester City for £6 million, winning the Premier League title in his only season there. In 2012, he was transferred to Fiorentina, making over 100 appearances across three seasons before signing with Atlético Madrid in 2015, where won the Europa League and UEFA Super Cup in 2018.
On this day in 2010, Togo team buses attacked
On 8 January 2010, gunmen fired upon two Togo team buses, killing 3 people and wounding 7 others.
The gunmen fired multiple shots into both buses, however, killing three people--assistant coach Amelete Abalo, press officer Stan Ocloo, and driver Mário Adjoua. The list of wounded included 5 players as well as the team doctor and physiotherapist.
Togo withdrew from the Cup of Nations following the attack, prompting a CAF ban and a $50,000 fine. Togo appealed the ban, which was lifted later that year.
