Football is once again at the centre of a racism storm as a Brentford fan has been arrested for an alleged 'racially-aggravated offence' against Derby County's Duane Holmes and Wigan's Nathan Byrne was sent an abusive message on Twitter.
Later on Saturday, Wilfried Zaha also revealed he had been sent a message calling him a 'diving monkey' after he won a penalty in Crystal Palace's win over Newcastle.
The alleged incident against Holmes was reported during Brentford's 3-3 draw with Derby on Saturday.
While Wigan have said they are 'angered' by the message which Byrne received on Twitter after his side's 2-2 draw with Bristol City.
The message which Byrne took a screenshot of and re-posted on Twitter read: 'You filthy black b****** I hope you and your family die you slave c***.'
Wigan have reported the Byrne incident to the police. In a statement, the Latics said they have 'reported the abuse as a hate crime and will work with the relevant authorities to ensure the actions of the person responsible are dealt with appropriately'.
'There is no place for discrimination in society and social media is not an exception to those rules. We find this behaviour abhorrent.'
Meanwhile, Derby boss Frank Lampard said a fan did abuse Holmes.
'Duane Holmes complained that he was racially abused - I didn't see it, I was facing play and a fan came up to him at the side of the dugout and abused him,' he told Sky Sports post-match.
'Because it's such an important issue I don't want to go beyond what I know, but it was very clearly reported by the players and the people around.'
A Brentford statement read: 'Brentford Football Club can confirm that a season ticket holder was arrested following today's game against Derby County.
'The man in question has been accused of committing a racially-aggravated public order offence in the later stages of today's game.
'He was identified at the time, removed from the ground and subsequently arrested.
'Brentford FC will continue to liaise with the Metropolitan Police, who will now investigate the incident.
'The club utterly condemns discrimination of any kind. It is abhorrent and has no place in society and we are determined to drive it out of Griffin Park.
'The most severe sanctions will be imposed on any individual convicted of discrimination and we will await the result of the Police investigation before commenting further.'
Zaha then retweeted a message from a Newcastle fan, which read: 'Such a diving Monkey @WilfriedZaha'.
The Palace winger captioned it 'lol' and posted a quizzical emoji as English football dealt with another incident of racial abuse.

I wonder how people who see and call their fellow humans monkey because of colour differences pay huge some of money to watch these so called monkeys on the field of play. If u pay to watch a monkey play, then who are you?

Absolutely spot on, an absolute disgrace that in 2019 there are people narrow-minded and backward enough, not only to hold such views, but express them and think it acceptable to do so. All right-minded people stand with our club, Nathan and all those subjected to such abuse

Let’s take Manchester United’s name out of this people, they are in no way connected to this racist and he shouldn’t be named as a ‘Man Utd fan’. He is basically a racist that is in dire need of education

If it's done through social media. Find the person/people responsible and let's bang em in jail for a month. Tougher punishment might mean less crimes....

Who cares about "online racist abuse"? I know racism is the hot topic at the moment but if you're clinging to a few tweets for a story you're trying too hard. Surely "Brentford fan arrested" tells you it's being dealt with.

Perhaps I was naive to think that I wouldn’t have to see this sort of thing linked with my club but here we are. Its shameful that this is happening and needs to be reported to the police
