Ghana drew 0-0 with England in their second FIFA World Cup group stage match. After the game, goalkeeper Benjamin Asare spoke about his performance.
This was your first FIFA World Cup start. What did it mean to you when you found out you would be starting for the first time?
I'm personally very happy. This is my responsibility. Every time I step onto the field, I must focus on improving myself. I want to thank Almighty God, the people of Ghana for their support, my fans, and everyone who loves and supports me. I pray for them and hope everything goes well.
Let's talk about the penalty controversy. I was watching from the other side. Did you and the team discuss whether Ghana should have been awarded a penalty?
That was the referee's decision. While we were still playing, there was nothing to say. All we could do was focus on the match and keep playing.
Kane is one of Europe's top scorers this season, yet you limited him effectively. He had only one shot on target the entire game, and you saved it. How did it feel facing him? Did you communicate with him during the match?
It's normal. For me, it's part of the game. Facing Kane is nothing unusual. Even top goalkeepers concede goals. So why shouldn't they be able to score against me? Of course they have that possibility, but I always want to prove myself and show everyone that this is my job and I can do it well. I'm very grateful that God allowed me to deliver this result for the people of Ghana.
What did the coach say in the dressing room after the match? Who came over to congratulate you?
Many people came to talk to me because they know me and know what I'm capable of. This is my life's work—I'm working hard to achieve my goals. I'm grateful to Almighty God for answering my prayers and making everything turn out well.
How did it feel to start your first FIFA World Cup match?
Very natural.
What is the difference between the Ghana Premier League and the FIFA World Cup level?
There is no difference. We are equals.
