Captain Paul Pogba leads by example and Luke Shaw scores his first career goal to hand Jose Mourinho's Manchester United a 2-1 win over Leicester City.
Match Goals
3' Penalty Goal! Man Utd 1-0 Leicester (Pogba)
The ball strikes Amartey on the top of the arm from a deflection off Morgan and the referee points to the spot. A dream start for the home side. Pogba will take the penalty.
Pogba stutters on his run-up, taking an age to arrive at the ball. Once he does strike it, the Frenchman powers his effort into the top corner, beyond the reach of Schmeichel. The perfect start for Pogba and United.
83' GOAL! Man Utd 2-0 Leicester (Shaw)
Shaw gets the goal to surely kill off the game. It's a huge moment for the defender, notching his first career goal. He makes a late run down the left inside channel to latch on to Mata's chipped pass. Shaw takes a touch to get back past Ricardo Pereira before guiding his effort under Schmeichel into the back of the net.
90+1 GOAL! Man Utd 2-1 Leicester (Vardy)
Leicester are still in with a chance here as Vardy opens his account for the term. Ricardo Pereira's cross travels all the way through and strikes the post. Vardy is on hand to convert the rebound from close range.
Match Report
Goals from Paul Pogba and Luke Shaw secured Manchester United an underwhelming 2-1 victory over Leicester City in the opening game of the 2018-19 Premier League season.
United went into the campaign on the back of a tumultuous pre-season that was dominated by discontent and a lack of signings, leading to Jose Mourinho making veiled digs at the club's hierarchy and, while they secured all three points at home, the team's display was hardly an emphatic response.
Initially all looked rosy at Old Trafford, as United's encouraging start saw them go ahead through captain Pogba, but thereafter Leicester were the controlling force in the first period.
The only thing missing from Leicester's display was a killer instinct in the final third before Jamie Vardy's second-half introduction, though his stoppage-time effort was too little, too late, as Shaw's first senior goal seven minutes from time proved decisive in the final reckoning.
United stroked the ball around confidently during the early exchanges and that poise was personified by Pogba when he placed a third-minute penalty into the top-right corner after Daniel Amartey was adjudged to have handled Alexis Sanchez's deflected shot.

What a big match between the two... Mourinho was in good shape today and I realised that his performance increased a lot since his last match in the International Champions Cup... my best goal is Luke Shaw's in the 83rd minute... Mourinho seems to be happy and I am sure he will be trying his best to win the Premier League... Pogba's goal is the fastest Premier League goal in history... he scored it in the 2th minute... congratulations Pogba for being the first one to score in the Premier League this season... All of best Manchester United...

Biggest news is SHAW. Scores a brilliant goal, had a MVP performance yet the consolation goal from Vardy came from his sloppy defensive duties. Mixed performance and the jury still out there if he now own his mark. First half Manutd were awful but redeemed themselves in the second half. Difficult to beat I must add

Struggled but a wining start congrats for that!! Fred, Bailey, Peraira and Shaw played fantastic...Sanchez needs to connect with the team..if he can show some positive play ManU can show some real class... Sanchez play and passes seems to be horrible Worst player of the match...

not a very bad start for us. Thanks we managed to keep De Gea, Andreas plays much better with Fred. He reminds me of Scholes. Pogba world class, luke shaw improving, Rashford still a kid, Lukaku still on vacation. Mata fantastic, Darmian still wondering why he chose playing football. Sanchez plays like a referee.

Not impressed with the type of play, but the most important is that we got our 3 points. We try to improve for next match. GGMU

Again not an attacking performance from Manchester United. Again Park The Bus. And the problem is not regular starters. If you watch each and every match of the season, Man Utd will not have the same defence which should be for better performances. Although nice one by Reds and liked Pogba's leadership.

what was De Gea thinking...?? he's absolutely responsible about conceding that last minute goal. ManUnited can't afford to take such risk or make such mistakes like the previous season. they lost many points last season by doing such stupid staffs. i'm still very annoyed about that stupid last minute goal.... pathetic

Well English referees do not have the balls to give penalties against Man U. World is watching the refereeing standards EPL, fist day itself tells a story. Has English FA Referee Association decided to give Man U EPL title on the Fist of the season. 👏👏👏

I think our pass accuracy was the problem but seems it will come good and faster, some players clearly were not used to each other in terms of passing aniwez let's wait and see everyone settle.

Great to see Luke Shaw playing with such confidence and getting a sublime goal! Fred looked ok but needs to have more composure and not getting irritated too easily in remaining games. Btw, Pereira was fantastic today, feels like a new signing, give the kid more playing time Jose!

Good win tonight but a bit disappointing to have conceded late on. Our finishing was a bit sloppy tonight but apart from that I think we played well. Pogba and Shaw were my 2 stand out players tonight without a doubt! And I'm not sure if anyone else heard it but around the 91st minute, José tapped Shaw on the back and said "Fantastic". And Mourinhos celebration after Shaws goal was class👌
