On this day in 2011 - Marcelo scored his first goal in UCL for Madrid
On 16 March 2011, a brilliant goal from Marcelo as he exchanged passes with Cristiano Ronaldo before scoring helped Real Madrid reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2004.
On this day in 2014 - Gerrard kissed Man United goodbye
On 16 March 2014, Gerrard scored two penalties and missed another in Liverpool's 3β0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Liverpool captain Gerrard demonstrated their superiority with penalties either side of the interval as Liverpool exerted almost complete domination over a home team looking in need of a drastic overhaul.
Gerrard missed another spot-kick after Daniel Sturridge went to ground under a Nemanja Vidic challenge - he picking up his fourth red card against Liverpool in the process - but there was no stopping Luis Suarez as he added a third.
On this day in 2014 - Messi became the all-time top scorer for Barcelona
Lionel Messi became Barcelona's all-time top goalscorer in all games - including friendlies - as he has taken his tally to 371 goals following his hat-trick in 7-0 win over Osasuna.
The Argentina international already became the top goalscorer in the club's history in official matches two years ago, erasing Cesar Rodriguez from the record books, but Paulino Alcantara's number had stayed out of Messi's reach.
Alcantara, born in the Philippines, scored 369 goals in 357 games as a Barca player between 1912 and 1927, but the Blaugrana legend was overtaken by Messi.
On this day in 1999 - Ginola scored a wonderful solo goal for Tottenham
David Ginola scored this wonderful solo goal against Barnsley to send Tottenham through to the FA Cup semi-final.
On this day in 1978 - The Eagles Of Carthage got grounded
On 16 March 1978, Nigeria took third place in the African Cup of Nations by default after their opponents, Tunisia, walked off in the first half.
Tunisia (nicknamed the Eagles of Carthage) took an early lead with a 19th-minute goal from forward Mohamed Akid (pictured). They held the lead until the 42nd minute when the referee awarded a goal to Nigeria's Baba Otu Mohammed. The Tunisians protested the decision and, when the referee refused to change his mind, they walked off the pitch in protest.
When they refused to return, the match was declared a forfeit and recorded as a 2-0 win for Nigeria. The Confederation of African Football then banned Tunisia from all CAF competitions for two years.
