Hi all, welcome to All Football's On This Day! Let's find out what happened today (April 24th) in football history. If you have more stories and news that happened on this day in history, feel free to post them in the comment area and share them with AFers.

On this day in 2013 - Lewy scored 4 goals in Dortmund 4-1 Real Madrid

Robert Lewandowski scored four goals as Dortmund beat Real Madrid 4-1 and took a huge step toward reaching the club's second Champions League final.

With a victory in the first leg of the semifinal, Dortmund made it six wins from six at home and extended Madrid's run of six consecutive defeats in Germany.

Lewandowski opened the scoring in the eighth minute, only for Cristiano Ronaldo to equalize against the run of play two minutes before the interval.

Lewandowski beat the offside trap to claim his second in the 50th, and the Poland striker completed his hat trick in stunning fashion five minutes later.

He rounded off the scoring with a penalty in the 67th, after Xabi Alonso felled Marco Reus.

Dortmund finally reached the final in that year but lost to Bayern 2-1.

On this day in 2012 - Chelsea drew 2-2 with Barca to reach the UCL final

Chelsea produced one of the most memorable UEFA Champions League performances in history as they defeated Barcelona 3-2 on aggregate in their semi-final at Camp Nou.

The Blues displayed herculean resolve in defence to hold out against the reigning European champions, playing the majority of the second leg contest with only 10 men after John Terry was dismissed for a knee in the back of Alexis Sanchez.

Pep Guardiola's side were already back on terms on aggregate after Sergio Busquets had slotted home in the 35th minute and looked to be on course for the final when Lionel Messi released Andres Iniesta to beat Petr Cech soon after Terry's needless moment of madness.

But Ramires grabbed a crucial away goal for the Premier League side seconds before the break, producing a sublime first-time lob over Victor Valdes after being released by Frank Lampard to put Roberto di Matteo's men back in the box seat on away goals.

Messi missed a glorious opportunity to fire Barca back in front at the start of the second half, crashing his penalty against the face of the bar after Didier Drogba brought down Cesc Fabregas and saw another late effort strike the base of the outstanding Cech's post.

On this day in 2016 - Mahrez was named the 2015/16 PFA Player of the Year!

Mahrez was one of four Leicester players named in the PFA Team of the Year in April 2016,[34] and later that month he won the PFA Players' Player of the Year award. He was the first African to earn the accolade.

When Leicester finished the season as champions, Mahrez became the first Algerian to win a Premier League medal. He ended the season with 17 goals & 11 assists.

On this day in 1954 - Liverpool sank

On 24 April 1954, Liverpool ended 50 consecutive seasons in the top flight with a 3-0 loss to Blackpool. They would not return for eight years.

The 1953-54 season started poorly, with five losses in their first eight matches. They hit bottom on 19 December after a 5-1 loss to Manchester United and remained there for the remaining 19 weeks. At one point, they set a current club record by going 14 matches without a win.

A win against Blackpool in their last match would have put them above Middlesbrough on goal average, but Blackpool won 3-0, firmly sticking Liverpool on the bottom.

They remained in Division 2 until 1962 when Bill Shankly, in only his second full season in charge, guided them back to the top flight, where they have remained ever since.

On This Day in 1954 - Wolves hunger no more

On 24 April 1954, Wolverhampton won their first league title, beating Tottenham 2-0 in their final match of the season.

Playing before a crowd of 44,000, Wolves took the lead with a goal from center forward Roy Swinbourne (pictured) in the 18th minute. He then added a second in the 68th minute to seal the victory. As it turned out, they would have claimed the title even with a loss, as West Brom lost 3-0 (West Brom did not go empty-handed, however--they won the FA Cup a week later over Preston North End).

Wolves went on to win two more titles in 1958 and 1959, and finished as runners-up again in 1955 and 1960.
