On this day in 2018,  Messi scored his 100th UCL goal

Having made it to 100 European club goals on 18 October 2017 against Olympiacos, Messi (who also has three UEFA Super Cup strikes) now becomes just the second man to achieve a century in the senior UEFA competition after Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid forward was also the first to get 100 for a single club with his opening strike versus Paris Saint-Germain on 14 February 2018.

However, while Ronaldo needed 144 games to register his 100 UEFA Champions League goals, Messi has taken just 123. Messi opened his account against Panathinaikos on 2 November 2005 and attained the 50 milestone against AC Milan on 3 April 2012.

On this day in 2009, Liverpool beat Man Utd 4-1 at Old Trafford

A Cristiano Ronaldo penalty after 23 minutes had United supporters revelling in their rivals' misery but it was a lead that lasted just five minutes as Torres capitalised on a rare Vidic error to equalise.

Gerrard picked himself up from the ground to dispatch a penalty after he was fouled by Patrice Evra to give his side the lead going into half-time, before Vidic saw red for a professional foul on Liverpool's skipper after the break.

From the resulting free-kick, with 13 minutes left on the clock, Fabio Aurelio bent a sumptuous effort past a crestfallen Edwin van der Sar.

United's woes were exacerbated in the final minute when Liverpool substitute Andrea Dossena lobbed a sublimely taken fourth over van der Sar.

On this day in 1979, Nicolas Anelka was born

Anelka's career started with Paris Saint-Germain in 1996, but he made only 12 appearances for them before moving to Arsenal for a fee of £500,000 in 1997. In London, he was part of the Double-winning side of 1997-98, then contributed 18 goals in the 1998-99 season and won the PFA Young Player of the Year award. But he grew discontent with his role and his salary, earning the nickname "Le Sulk," and moved to Real Madrid that summer for £22.3M.

Additional moves followed in short order, with Anelka rarely staying long in one place. After winning the Champions League with Real Madrid in 2000, he returned to PSG later that year (transfer fee: £20M), then spent time with Manchester City (£12M), Fenerbahçe (£7M), Bolton (£8M), and Chelsea (£15M). His transfer fees to that point totaled £84.8M, which was a record until Cristiano Ronaldo's £80M move from Manchester United to Real Madrid in 2009 put his total over £92M.

Anelka won another Premier League title with Chelsea, along with two more FA Cups. He also won the league's Golden Boot after scoring 19 league goals for them in the 2008-09 season. But he fell out of favor in the ensuing seasons and moved to Shanghai Shenhua on a free transfer in January 2012. He then spent time with Juventus and West Brom before joining Mumbai City in 2014.

On this day in 2004, Man City 4-1 Man Utd

Manchester City completed a torrid week for United with a comprehensive win over their fierce rivals.

United, hoping to forget their European exit, went behind in the third minute when Robbie Fowler touched the ball in.

Jon Macken then swivelled and sent a first-time volley into the corner of the net before Paul Scholes gave the visitors hope with a 20-yard strike.

But Trevor Sinclair pounced after a Mikael Silvestre error and Shaun Wright-Phillips hit a stunning drive.

The scoreline, though, was harsh on United, who lost to their neighbours for only the third time in Sir Alex Ferguson's 17-year reign.

On this day in 1974, Zaire won their second Africa Cup of Nations

In 1974, they reached the final in large part due to midfielder Ndaye Mulamba, who scored five goals in the earlier rounds, including the match-winner in their 3-2 victory over Egypt in the semifinals. He had a pair of goals in that game, making it his second brace of the tournament. He got a third in the originally-scheduled final against Zambia, played at the International Stadium in Cairo on 12 March. It ended 2-2 after extra time to force a replay.

When the teams reconvened in Cairo two days later, Mulamba got his fourth brace, scoring in the 30th and 76th minutes to lead Zaire to a 2-0 win. His 9-goal total was the best of the tournament.
