PSG boss Luis Enrique 'demanded total control' over the squad before joining

Luis Enrique reportedly sought assurances he would be given full control over the players in his squad at Paris Saint-Germain before agreeing to becoming the club's new manager.

The former Barcelona and Spain manager was confirmed as PSG boss last week on a two-year deal.

Luis Enrique replaced Christophe Galtier, who was sacked after just one season in charge despite leading PSG to the Ligue 1 title.

According to PSG Community journalist Max Miotto, Luis Enrique had agreed to join the reigning French champions on the condition he would have total control over the squad.

This would include reshaping the squad in the transfer market, with the 53-year-old's demand aimed at ensuring calm at the club which has faltered in Europe despite several big-name signings.

Luis Enrique was reportedly open to allowing stars Lionel Messi and Neymar leave the club during the negotiations.

Messi has since agreed to join MLS side Inter Miami following the conclusion of his contract, while Neymar's future remains uncertain.

Luis Enrique reportedly remains open to including Kylian Mbappe in his plans for the upcoming season despite ongoing uncertainty over the French star's future at the club.

Mbappe has been locked in a contract impasse with PSG this summer after revealing his plan to leave the Parc de Princes when his current deal expires next year.

The 24-year-old, who snubbed Real Madrid to pen a £650,000-per-week deal with the French giants last year, announced he will not trigger the one-year extension attached to his PSG contract.

In response, Parc de Princes chiefs told Mbappe that he must either agree to the extension or leave the club this summer, allowing PSG to collect a sizeable fee rather than lose him on a free transfer.

It is believed the France World Cup winner is determined to reject both options, even if it risks enduring a season on the sidelines.

The impasse presents an early challenge for Luis Enrique at the start of his time at the club.

Six PSG players have reportedly complained about Mbappe following comments the forward made in a recent interview about the state of the club.

Luis Enrique has returned to club management for the first time since leaving Barcelona back in 2017.

He had been out of work since leaving Spain at the end of the World Cup last year.
