The Bundesliga made a sensational return as superstars around the world tuned in for their first taste of football since the coronavirus pandemic caused leagues to suspend across the globe.

Borussia Dortmund and Schalke went head-to-head in the feature match as the German topflight kicked off at 14:30 in behind closed doors matches.

With the action from Germany, other footballers itching to return to the pitch looked on with envy.

PSG forward Kylian Mbappe couldn't contain his excitement as the Bundesliga kicked-off during the afternoon as he tweeted that he would be tuning in.

Mbappe's domestic season was cancelled after French authorities opted to not finish the 2019/20 Ligue 1 campaign. The Frenchman could still return to action, however, with UEFA still hoping to finish the Champions League later this summer.

Manchester United star Marcus Rashford also expressed his delight with the return of football as he tweeted: 'Oh my days, I actually canโ€™t wait.'

Former Manchester City midfielder Nigel De Jong took to Instagram as he prepared to go live as a pundit, but questioned whether the league should even be back yet.

He wrote: 'After 68 days of football isolation, live football is back!! On the way to the @beinsports studio. Good or bad decision to start again?'

Football fans also took to Twitter to express their delight as Erling Braut Haaland and co returned to action. One fan said it was all a little too much to have football back and that he could cry.

Another fan was in disbelief as she tweeted: 'Live football is that you?'

Special measures were adhered to before, during and after matches to ensure the safety of all players and staff.

Substitutes sat far apart on the bench to keep social distance, match balls were sprayed with disinfectant before the match and at half-time and fans were not allowed inside the stadium.
