The 1997 Ballon d'Or, given to the best football player in Europe as judged by a panel of sports journalists from UEFA member countries, was awarded to Ronaldo Nazario on 23 December 1997.

Ronaldo Nazario, having only recently turned 21, became the youngest ever winner of the coveted award and the record is still yet to be beaten.

The legendary Brazilian scored a silly 47 goals in 49 games in the 1996/97 season for Barcelona before departing to Inter for €28 million and went on to claim his second Ballon d'Or five years later when he returned to Spain with Real Madrid.
