Southampton legend mocks Reds' social media post showing Lovren's pass back

Matt Le Tissier - and a flood of football fans - have mocked a recent social media post from Liverpool showing an underwhelming piece of defending from Dejan Lovren.

The 30-year-old centre back was filmed taking control of the ball in the friendly against Blackburn earlier this week before then passing backwards.

But Twitter users were left confused at the club's decision to share the clip and bill it as a highlight, with Southampton legend Le Tissier among them.

He tweeted: 'When the person running your Twitter account has never played football' in reply to the bizarre footage - and even included a confused emoji for good measure.

Lovren is seen stepping forward to intercept a ball forward from the Championship club in the video.

He then turns towards his own goal to round off the now-viral Tweet.

The questionable nature of the post was enhanced by the fact that the eight seconds were also slowed down.

The caption 'Nice, @Dejan06Lovren' drew widespread bewilderment, with countless comments poking fun at the seemingly ordinary piece of skill.

Lovren arrived at Anfield in 2014 and, despite making 130 appearances, has often been criticised by the Liverpool faithful after a number of notable mistakes.

He has also been forced to endure dropping further down the pecking order behind Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip in recent seasons, rendering his future far from certain.

But with Liverpool edging ever close to their first league title in three decades, Lovren may play a bit part role in helping the club seal their success.

The Croatian international has struggled for fitness this season but appears fit and firing ahead of the Premier League's restart this week. He featured in the 6-0 friendly romp against Blackburn at Anfield.

The champions-elect will resume their domestic campaign against Everton in the Merseyside derby on Sunday.
