Having been with Real Madrid for more than a decade, Marcelo is still going strong and is one of their best players.
The Brazilian has had some great times at the Spanish club, winning every honour there is in club football, with three Champions League titles and two La Liga titles.
Here, we give you a list of 5 things you should know about him.
1. His grandfather's influence
Marcelo's grandfather had a great impact on his life and career. When he was a child and started playing football, it was his grandfather who always supported him and went to all his games.
Even when he was frustrated that he was always on the bench and wanted to quit, it was the influence of his grandad that convinced a young Marcelo to continue playing.
His grandfather also had a cabinet in which he collected all records of the left-back's achievements. He passed away soon after Marcelo won his first Champions League, in which the Brazilian scored the third goal for his side in extra-time.
2. He came from a poor background
Like many great footballers, Marcelo came from a very poor background. His family couldn't even afford the gas money that was needed for him to travel up and down the country playing club football.
It was his grandfather who persisted with him, somehow managing to pay for all the costs against all odds.
His grandfather also took part in a not-so-legal lottery and won enough money to buy an old Beetle in which he shepherded the young Marcelo to various games.
3. Surprise call from Real Madrid
At the tender age of 18, when he was playing for Fluminense, Marcelo got a call from Real Madrid.
He couldn't believe that they were actually legitimately looking to sign him and even his family later told him they only believed that he really did sign for the Spanish club when it was announced in the media.
He chose not to go out when presented with a loan opportunity and instead decided to fight for his place in the team, and once Roberto Carlos left the club, he made the left-back spot his own.
4. Helping hand from Roberto Carlos
When Marcelo moved to Real Madrid, it was Roberto Carlos who made sure that the young Brazilian would settle in without any problems.
Even though the youngster was going to be his future replacement, Carlos was the first player to offer his phone number and told him to call any time he wanted anything.
The Brazilian legend also invited Marcelo and his wife to his family dinner during the youngster's first Christmas in Madrid. It went a long way in making sure he settled down at the club and started performing.
5. Praise from legends for his play
Marcelo has received a lot of praise from his peers as well as legends of the game. Roberto Carlos has called him his heir.
Argentina legend Diego Maradona once named him the best player in La Liga after Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Even the legendary Italian defender, Paolo Maldini, was full of praise for the Brazilian left-back.
Marcelo has continued to earn plaudits for his performances and not once during his stay in Madrid all these years has that changed.
