After Andre Gomes' horrific injury, here are 10 of football's worst leg breaks

  /  Freddy13

Everton have confirmed that Andre Gomes has suffered a fracture dislocation to his right ankle and have issued a positive update on Andre Gomes after his horror injury.

A Toffees statement today read: “Everton Football Club can confirm Andre Gomes underwent surgery to repair a fracture dislocation to his right ankle earlier today and the procedure went extremely well.

The midfielder suffered an apparently severe injury in Tottenham game as Son Heung-min's tackle from behind led to Gomes' collision with Serge Aurier.

Leg breaks often pose further complications down the line and are among the worst injuries a professional player can sustain.

Apart from miserable Gomes, below we look at nine of football's worst leg breaks and see how long it took the individuals to recover from their injuries.

Seamus Coleman

Everton skipper Seamus Coleman visited the Tottenham dressing room to console Heung-min Son after Andre Gomes’ horror injury. Because he knows that feeling.

2 years ago, Coleman suffered a broken leg during Ireland's goalless draw with Wales at the Aviva Stadium.

Ireland manager Martin O'Neill said he would only be guessing if he was to put a timescale on when Coleman will be back in action.

James McCarthy

Another Everton player. For the sake, why Toffees are so unlucky?

McCarthy suffered a double leg break in Everton’s clash with West Brom after attempting to block a Salomon Rondon shot.

He got his right leg in between the ball and Rondon as the West Brom striker wound up to shoot, resulting in him coming through full force on the back of McCarthy’s leg, breaking his tibula and fibula.

Rondon was visibly distressed afterwards as he broke down in tears as well like Son.

Djibril Cisse

The Frenchman was very unlucky in that he broke his leg twice during his playing career.

Djibril Cisse's first horrific injury came in Liverpool's game against Blackburn back in 2004, when he came off second best in a challenge with Jay McEveley.

His second - this time his right leg - came in France's World Cup friendly against China in 2006, and delayed his transfer to Marseille at the time.

Despite the severity of both injuries, Cisse was back playing football after just seven months in the two separate occasions.

Henrik Larsson

A legend at Celtic, Henrik Larsson broke his leg against Lyon in a narrow defeat in 1999.

The Swede suffered a double fracture while attempting to tackle Serge Blanc and both fans and teammates suspected the worst.

He was taken off on a stretcher just 12 minutes into the tie.

Fortunately, Larsson's injury wasn't as complicated as first feared and just seven months later he was back on the pitch for The Bhoys.

Alan Smith

The Manchester United man broke his leg in an FA Cup defeat to Liverpool back in 2006.

Alan Smith also dislocated his ankle in the same injury and at the time was expected to be out of the game for at least nine months.

Smith had an operation on his leg and started on the road to recovery.

And after a long rehabilitation process, Smith was back on the pitch after just seven months out of the game.

Eduardo

Almost exactly two years to the day before Aaron Ramsey's horror injury, Eduardo suffered a terrible leg break following a tackle by Birmingham's Martin Taylor in 2008.

As well as breaking his left fibula, the striker's injury was further complicated by an open dislocation of his left ankle.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger initially called for Taylor to be banned for the challenge, although he later retracted those comments.

Eduardo returned for Arsenal a year later but was not the same player he had been.

Aaron Ramsey

The Arsenal midfielder broke his leg when he came off second best in a challenge with Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross in 2010.

The Welshman spent nine months on the sidelines recovering from the injury before returning to the Gunners squad.

After loan spells at Nottingham Forest and Cardiff, the Welshman returned to north London and slowly re-kindled his form before the awful injury.

Remarkably, Ramsey has not been physiologically effected by the traumatic injury, despite breaking his leg aged just 19.

Luke Shaw

The Manchester United and England left-back feared he might never play again after suffering an horrific double leg-break.

Luke Shaw was out of action for 10 months after suffering the appalling injury in a Champions League game against PSV.

He made his comeback in a 2-0 friendly win at Wigan ten months later and pushed on from there.

Shaw has now completed recovered from his 2015 injury, but has struggled for first team football under Jose Mourinho this season.

Abou Diaby

The Arsenal man fractured his ankle and ruptured ligaments in his leg in a 3-0 win over Sunderland in 2006.

Abou Diaby made a return to football eight months later, but the injury appeared to have a profound effect on his career.

He picked up a number of subsequent injuries, which were seemingly linked, and was never quite the same player before finally leaving Arsenal.

Diaby eventually headed to Marseille, but to date has made just five appearances since signing for the French outfit in 2015.

Kieron Dyer

The West Ham man had never been a stranger to the treatment table, but easily the most serious injury of his career came in 2007.

Kieron Dyer, who had only joined the Hammers from Newcastle three weeks earlier, broke his right leg in two places following a nasty tackle from Bristol Rovers left-back Joe Jacobson.

The incident took place just 10 minutes into a Carling Cup second-round tie at the Memorial Stadium.

Dyer next played two years later before leaving West Ham in 2011.
