Arsenal make decision on Viktor Gyokeres move after assessing transfer plans

Arsenal are seemingly pressing ahead with their attempts to sign Viktor Gyokeres ahead of the transfer deadline.

The Gunners were always expected to buy a new striker this summer and have had to pivot after their No.1 target, Benjamin Sesko, opted to sign a new contract with Red Bull Leipzig just before Euro 2024.

Arsenal have subsequently been linked with a number of top forwards including the likes of Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen - and it is the former who is now more likely to end up at the Emirates before the end of the month.

As outlined by a new report from Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, Arsenal are 'very active' on Gyokeres and, at this point, unlikely to move for Osimhen, who still wants to leave Napoli this summer.

Both the Gunners and Chelsea have been touted as potential destinations for the wantaway striker in recent weeks and it has been reported that the latter have explored the possibility of doing a loan deal for the Nigeria international.

But for Arsenal, a move for Gyokeres off the back of his remarkable maiden season with Sporting Lisbon in Portugal seems to be the play ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Gyokeres, 26, plundered 43 goals in 50 games for Sporting last season after moving to Portugal in a deal worth 20million from Championship outfit Coventry City.

It emerged at the end of last month that Sporting had taken up an option to reduce Coventry's sell-on percentage, sparking speculation that the Portuguese giants were planning to cash in on Gyokeres while his stock is high.

A report from Sport revealed that Sporting paid a sum of €2m (£1.7m) to take Coventry's 15 per cent sell on clause down to just 10 per cent - meaning they would stand to bank a larger slice of any fee should Gyokeres be sold in the coming weeks.

Arsenal have signed David Raya on a permanent basis and concluded a deal for Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori this summer. As well as targeting a new forward, the Gunners are also planning to bolster their midfield and have identified Euro 2024 winner Mikel Merino as their top target, though the Spaniard is also being pursued by Barcelona.
