Aston Villa rejected three offers for midfielder Douglas Luiz, including one on deadline day from Tottenham.
The 23-year-old has fewer than 18 months left on his deal at the West Midlands club and boss Steven Gerrard confirmed last week that discussions had not yet been opened over a contract extension.
Arsenal were also linked with a £30million January move for the Brazil international having worked with boss Mikel Arteta at Manchester City, while rivals Spurs ended up signing fellow central midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur from Juventus.
Luiz will therefore remain at Villa Park until the end of the season, a club he has represented 94 times since his move from the current Premier League champions in 2019.
Villa also opted to wait until the summer on a move for Brighton's Yves Bissouma.
The club had a £25million offer rejected earlier this month and are likely to return with a new bid for Bissouma in the summer when the 25-year-old will have just 12 months left on contract.
Bissouma is back from international duty with Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations and was said to be open to making the move, but Brighton wanted £50m for the 25-year-old, who has 18 months left on contract.
And should Villa recruit him in the summer it would strengthen their midfield options, with the Mali star a potential partner for Luiz.
But speaking last week, Gerrard said on the Brazil star's deal: 'No, we haven't opened contract talks yet with Douglas.
'Dougie has done okay for us. We've been happy with his training level and the performances that he has given.
'We still think that there's room for him to get better and improve. You know, he had a bit of an injury when we first arrived and we still think there's another gear or two for Dougie to go into.'
