Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has caused consternation by liking a Cristiano Ronaldo post celebrating Manchester United's win against the Gunners.

The Portugese forward scored twice as Ralf Rangnick's side triumphed 3-2 at Old Trafford on Thursday evening.

And after the match Gabonese striker Aubameyang bizarrely 'liked' Ronaldo's social media post, with a Twitter account pointing out the odd decision.

The caption simply said: 'Arsenal's CAPTAIN,' followed by three cry-laughing emojis.

Ronaldo had posted on Instagram after the match to his 372million followers, saying: 'Our minds are already set on the next game, there’s no time to celebrate! Today’s win was very important to get back on track, but there’s still a long road to go until we reach our destination…

'Congrats to all my teammates, great spirit tonight! And a very special thank you to our supporters, we couldn’t have done it without you. #MUFC'

The post has already been liked more than 4.1m times and has been commented on by more than 80,000 people.

Emile Smith Rowe gave Arsenal the lead in controversial circumstances, before Bruno Fernandes and Ronaldo turned the game around.

Although Martin Odegaard equalised for Mikel Arteta's side shortly afterwards, the Norwegian fouled Fred in the box and 36-year-old Ronaldo scored the resulting penalty, which proved the winning goal.

Skipper Aubameyang, the club's top scorer this season, was surprisingly taken off with 15 minutes left.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, on punditry for Amazon, said after the game he was baffled by the decision to sub him off and said the move suggested 'something was not right'.
