Barcelona celebrate LaLiga title win with open-top bus parade

Barcelona manager Xavi handed our beers as Barcelona celebrated winning LaLiga with an open-top bus parade on Monday, 24 hours after being chased off the field by Espanyol ultras.

Thousands of fans lined the streets to greet the players and staff 24 hours after they were crowned champions for the first time in three years following their victory over Espanyol.

Xavi, who took over in late 2021 with the club in crisis following the departure of Ronald Koeman, has led the Catalan side to domestic glory again in his first full season in charge.

A smile beamed across the 43-year-old's face as he donned a more laid back look, waving to fans before handing one supporter on the side of the road a beer as the bus passed.

He then appeared to lead the chants on Barca's giant blue bus which read 'LaLiga 2022-23 champions', with players wearing caps, sunglasses and flags as they enjoyed the occasion in Spain.

Xavi’s players linked hands and bounced around the centre-circle on Sunday night after winning what was a demolition derby but angry Espanyol supporters then broke a non-existent security cordon and headed towards the champions who made their way quickly into the dressing room.

Security initially tried to block the fans, but there were too many and they made their ways towards the players in their numbers, some yielding weapons as they took unkindly to their rivals celebrating on their pitch.

Some ultras made their ways down the tunnel and were confronted by Barca players including Sergio Busquets and Marcos Alonso, while others turned their attention to the board, with the club on the verge of relegation.

It's not believed any players were harmed, though the quick exit from the pitch was provided a shock and a dampener to the club's celebrations for winning LaLiga.

Barcelona's women's team were also at the parade with their own bus after winning the Liga F title ahead of Real Madrid.

‘It’s a great feeling,’ said Xavi after his side were crowned champions. 'It’s a job well done.

'This started in July and after months of work and sacrifice we have achieved our aim. The fans and the club deserve it, it gives us stability and security that things are being done well.

‘We have sealed La Liga with a fantastic performance. We were brilliant tonight. The team relaxed at the end and Espanyol showed pride.’

Barca beat their rivals on Sunday 4-2, and raced into a 3-0 lead at half time thanks to a brace from Robert Lewandowski and another strike from Alejandro Balde.

Jules Kounde made it four just before half time, and relegation-bound Espanyol scored twice but they proved to be nothing more than consolation strikes as the champions were crowned.

Celebrations on the field were short-lived as home ultras raced onto the pitch, but the squad were allowed to celebate properly on Monday with their own fans.

Barca still have four games left to play in LaLiga, but cant be caught by Real Madrid, who trail the side by 14 points but have ambitions of winning another Champions League title.
