Barcelona held talks with Ousmane Dembele's agent on Monday in a bid to put an end to the growing scrutiny over the £135million striker.

Dembele was dropped from Barcelona's 4-3 defeat by Real Betis on Saturday after missing training on Thursday due to a stomach bug. He had reportedly recovered from the illness by the time a club doctor got to him.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona technical secretary Eric Abidal and general manager Pep Segura met with Dembele's agent Moussa Sissoko at the Sofia Hotel to draw a line under the saga. Dembele was not present due to his international commitments with France.

There, the Spanish publication says, Barcelona underlined their belief in Dembele's ability to contribute to the first team.

They are, however, hoping for a greater contribution from him this season after spending big to bring him to Nou Camp from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 after Neymar's exit to Paris Saint-Germain.

The Frenchman's form for Barcelona had been encouraging this season before his training absence.

He has scored six in 15 appearances in all competitions for the club this season, having mustered only four goals in 24 games in an injury-impacted debut year in Spain.

Sissoko spoke to Radio Monte Carlo on Monday evening and backed Dembele to fulfill his potential at Barcelona.

'We are aware that Ousmane has things to improve, but it is normal at his age,' Sissoko said. 'The people are on top of him.

'There was talk of a delay in the concentration for the game against Inter and the coach denied it. Now gastroenteritis. It's true that he called the club a little late, but he was sick. Even in this type of things a controversy is generated.

'He continues to work in a great club, the coach appreciates him, like (France manager Dideir) Deschamps in the national team. And I know that Abidal is very happy with what Ousmane is doing, he knows that he trains well.'

Demebele is currently with the France squad, preparing for games against Holland and Uruguay.
