Barcelona's Lamine Yamal becomes La Liga's youngest starter this century

Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal became the youngest La Liga starter this century on Saturday, as the Spanish giants beat Cadiz 2-0.

The 16-year-old came into the side in place of the suspended Raphinha, and caused the Cadiz fullbacks problems all games with his tricky dribbling.

He repeatedly linked up well with teammates, completing neat one-twos in attacking areas and whipping in dangerous crosses from the right wing.

The impressive full debut was almost marked with a goal, but Conan Ledesma made an excellent full-stretch save to keep out his curled effort.

Yamal was also perhaps unlucky not to win his side a penalty, as he was brought down in the Cadiz box after easing past his man, but nothing was given.

While he had never started a game before, Barca's latest youth prospect does already have a La Liga winners' medal after making his debut aged just 15 at the end of last season.

In doing so, he became the youngest player ever to make an appearance in the club's first team.

Yamal has also become a key member of the Spanish youth set-up, scoring 12 goals in 21 appearances from the U15s to U19s.

Unsurprisingly for a player so young, Yamal did not play the full 90 minutes against Cadiz and was subbed off in the closing stages.

He was replaced by Ferran Torres, who scored in injury time after Pedri broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute.

The scoreline didn't quite reflect Barca's dominance, as an inspired performance from Ledesma in the Cadiz goal kept them in the game.

'It looked like the ball was not going to go in today and it did,' manager Xavi Hernandez told Movistar Plus after the game.

'We predicted it was a day to keep a lot of possession and in the second half we were more patient, were better in positional play, took risks and a pass from [Ilkay] Gundogan to Pedri gave us what we needed.'

The win came in Barca's first home game at the Olympic Stadium, with their iconic Nou Camp currently undergoing a major renovation.
