Benfica are considering offering an escape route to forgotten Liverpool man Alberto Moreno this summer.

The Spanish full-back has fallen well down the pecking order at Anfield, and will depart Merseyside this summer after not being offered a new contract.

Portuguese giants Benfica are readying themselves to make a move and bring in Moreno to replace their sought after Alex Grimaldo, according to Lisbon based publication A Bola.

Grimaldo has been a staple part of Benfica's solid campaign, and featured as the side progressed to the quarter-final stage of the Europa League.

Moreno is set to consider his options in the summer, and has even been linked with a shock move to Spanish champions Barcelona.

The former Sevilla full back, who joined Liverpool in 2014 for £12million, is still highly regarded in Spain and Barca emerged as suitors as they look to expand their squad.

In Catalonia, first choice Jordi Alba currently has no reserve at the club with B-team left-back Marc Cucurella out on loan at Eibar and 19-year-old Juan Miranda having struggled to step-up this season.

Moreno began the 2017/18 season as Liverpool's first choice left-back, after briefly sharing the position with the versatile James Milner.

The emergence of Andrew Robertson, the following bedding in the period on Merseyside, soon brought an end to Moreno's days in the starting XI.

Moreno last featured for Liverpool in January, where he was part of a heavily changed Reds side who were defeated 2-1 by Wolves in the FA Cup third round.
