Talks are also ongoing with other venues - including some in England - after the German government imposed a travel ban in light of the ongoing pandemic and there are no exceptions for professional sports teams, meaning the last 16 fixture must be switched.
UEFA made contingency plans at the beginning of the campaign to find 'safe' venues, should something like this happen, and the Puskas Arena in Budapest has been designated as the stadium that will stage the clash.
As the hosts, Leipzig are permitted to come up with a suitable alternative - Sportsmail reported this week that contact has already been made with venues in England - but with only 11 days until the game, time is against them.
If they do not come up with a solution, UEFA will have the final say and the game will move to Hungary. Liverpool are awaiting further developments.
It is understood that a stadium in the London area has already been contacted as part of the preparations to ensure the tie goes ahead elsewhere.
A number of other options are also on the table. A potential reversing of the tie is under consideration, which would see Liverpool play at Anfield first before a one-off game.
Liverpool are not believed to be keen on sacrificing the advantage the club gained after finishing top of their group.
The possibility of a one-off tie between both clubs has not been ruled out, either.
The venue in London is thought to be ready and willing to step in and host a leg of the tie if needed.
UEFA have signalled they will be open to delaying fixtures currently affected by travel restrictions across the globe.
The latest possible date to finish last-16 games has been set on April 2, it was revealed on Tuesday.
Germany's border restrictions may also affect Manchester City's trip to face Borussia Monchengladbach on February 24 should the ban be extended.
