Carragher believes Son should not have seen red for tackle on Andre Gomes

Jamie Carragher believes that Tottenham's Son Heung-min shouldn't have been sent off for his challenge on Everton midfielder Andre Gomes during the 1-1 draw at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher felt that Son shouldn't have been dismissed.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher said: 'It’s definitely not a red. If that is a red then every challenge is endangering another player. There was a tackle from Choudhury on Salah – I didn’t think that was a red. Klopp made a thing about it.

'I think in the future of the game, if anyone makes a challenge where the know they can’t win the ball, I think that will be the next step with the game – people might not agree with that – but they will be red card decisions.'

Carragher added that many players are guilty of bad challenges during their careers which can have significant consequences for their opponents.

He said: 'I never criticise when someone does a bad challenge on someone because your own player will do a bad tackle next week. I’ve had a broken leg – I don’t think Lucas Neill meant to break my leg.

'I did a terrible tackle on Nani a few years ago – luckily it didn’t break his leg. There are plenty of players who want to hurt others and we’ve all probably put a bad challenge in ourselves in our careers.

'(Seamus) Coleman had a bad injury after a bad tackle from Neil Taylor, but then he got sent off the other week for a terrible tackle. Over the course of a player’s career it will work both ways.

Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino added that the incident left Son 'devastated' and also described the red card as 'very unfair' as he felt that the challenge wasn't malicious.

Pochettino told Sky Sports: 'Son is devastated. I was confused during the situation. When you watch it afterwards, it was never a tackle that intended to do harm. It’s just very, very unlucky. To finish with a red card for Son is very unfair.'

Gomes fell awkwardly after Aurier closed in, with Sky Sports only showing replays up to the point of contact due to the severity of the injury.

Players and coaching staff from both teams were left shocked by the incident, with Gomes eventually being stretchered off and 12 minutes being added on at the end of the game.
