Jamie Carragher believes Jose Mourinho’s time in the Premier League has come to an end after being sacked by Tottenham Hotspur following a dismal campaign.
Having already managed three of the 'big six', Carragher claims the others 'would never' consider hiring the Portuguese manager and that he would not be interested in joining a ‘project’ that does not offer a realistic chance of winning a trophy.
As a result, the Sky Sports pundit says Mourinho deserves a 'respectful goodbye' from the English top-flight and that the emphasis should remain on what he has achieved rather than his most recent downfall.
Carragher told The Telegraph: 'In the aftermath of Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur sacking there is more focus on what he is no longer achieving rather than how much he has already done.
'Say what you want about his recent record. It does not change the fact Mourinho is one of the greatest coaches of all time.
'Now it is over at Spurs, he deserves that recognition as part of a respectful goodbye from English football because I do not see how Jose ever works again in the Premier League.
'He has managed three of the ‘big six’ and the other three would never hire him. He does not strike me as someone interested in joining a ‘project’ that does not offer a realistic chance of winning the biggest prizes. The events at Spurs will not tarnish his Premier League legacy
Carragher went on to praise Mourinho's passion and even recalled his first encounter with the manager at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium during the 2005 League Cup Final.
He said the Chelsea manager had run to the technical area to accuse Luis Garcia of diving, which caused Carragher to shout: 'Don’t you f***ing start about diving. Your Porto side was the fucking worst'.
With Chelsea going on to win the game in extra-time, Carragher said Mourinho made an effort to find him in the tunnel to pass on his commiserations and explain himself.
Mourinho said his outburst came from his passion, telling Carragher: 'You know I was just fighting for my team, don’t you?'
Carragher went on to explain why he felt Mourinho had failed at Manchester United as Spurs, claiming to the players reluctancy to buy into his philosophy was the cause of his downfall.
He said: 'Mourinho's downfall at United and Spurs has been his inability to build a team to buy into his philosophy and bleed for him like the Porto, Chelsea and Inter Milan players.
Before stating that Mourinho would be missed in the English to-flight as he added a 'sprinkling gold dust' to every interview.
Carragher said: 'Spurs and United fans will say Mourinho will not be missed. For the rest of us, his personality will be. He has an aura unlike other managers, sprinkling gold dust in every interview, regardless of whether you agree with his comments.'
