In an interview in today's print edition of Dutch newspaper AD Sportswereld, Inter centre back Stefan de Vrij has spoken on how it felt to score in Sunday night's 4-2 Milan derby win.
The defender, who has been with the club since 2018, scored Inter's third goal of the game and he admits he was overjoyed when he seen the ball loop over Gianluigi Donnarumma into the net.
“It was the second goal I have scored in the derby, in a wonderful, wonderful atmosphere. I will always remember this goal. It was a really important moment in a really important match,” the recently turned 28-year-old explained in the interview.
“A unique emotion came over me. Antonio Candreva's cross was excellent and I just dived towards the ball and when I turned around I saw it in the net, it was a great feeling.”
He then spoke on the race for the Serie A title which is being fought for by three clubs in particular, Inter, Juventus and de Vrij's former employers Lazio.
“The three of us are fighting hard. We are convinced of our strength and you do not play a match like we did in the Milan derby without that but we have to show it every week.”
de Vrij concluded the interview by discussing his recent lack of playing time for the Dutch national team. Despite being ever present in squads for the past year and a half or so, de Vrij has just one appearance to show for it with that appearance coming back in October 2018.
“I just have to keep doing what I'm doing. Things have changed a lot in the national team. I'm a much better defender than the 2014 World Cup, but I think this says a lot about how much we've improved in recent years.”
